Canada loses Marcelo Flores due to torn ligaments for the 2026 World Cup
The Canadian player, with Mexican blood, will miss what would have been his first World Cup
The Canadian team suffered a high-impact loss just over a week before the start of the 2026 World Cup. Midfielder Marcelo Flores confirmed this Sunday that he will not be able to participate in the tournament after suffering a serious knee injury during the final of the Concacaf Champions Cup played with Tigres UANL.
The 22-year-old soccer player used his social networks to communicate the diagnosis he received after the medical studies carried out after the match against Toluca.
"Sorry for not answering anyone yet, these are very difficult times for me. I lost my ACL," wrote Flores, who had been called up by Canada on May 29 to join the squad that will compete in the World Cup.
The injury occurred on Saturday during the continental definition between Tigres and Toluca. In an offensive play inside the rival area, Flores managed to beat a defender with a cut, but in that movement his right knee became trapped in the grass. The midfielder immediately fell to the ground and required medical assistance.
After receiving treatment, he tried to get back up to continue in the game. However, the pain prevented him from supporting the affected leg and he ended up leaving the field towards the bench. The images showed the player visibly affected and unable to hold back his tears, aware that the injury could jeopardize his chances of playing in the most important national team tournament.
A blow for Canada and for the player himself
The confirmation of the rupture of the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee put an end to any possibility of Flores participating in the World Cup that will begin on June 11.
Born in Georgetown, Halton Hills, Canada, the midfielder chose to represent the Canadian team despite having the possibility of playing for Mexico. His call-up for the World Cup had arrived just a few days before the accident suffered in the regional final.
Flores has been characterized by providing speed, skill and the ability to unbalance in the midfield. His offensive profile allowed him to become an important alternative for both Tigres and the Canadian team.
After confirming the severity of the injury, the footballer also thanked the support received during the last hours.
"I just wanted to thank everyone for their messages. I really appreciate your concern. I will come back stronger," he said.
The player's absence represents a significant modification for Canada in the face of international competition. The North American team is part of Group B of the 2026 World Cup, along with Bosnia and Herzegovina, Qatar and Switzerland.
While the Canadian team prepares for its World Cup debut, Flores will begin his recovery process with the aim of returning to the field once he has overcome one of the most complex injuries for any professional soccer player.
