David Benavidez Opens the Doors to a Fight with Canelo at 175 Pounds
David Benavidez commented that Canelo Alvarez only fights for greatness, so he should look for a duel with him after defeating Dmitry Bivol
David Benavidez, World Boxing Council (WBC) champion, opened the doors to a possible confrontation with Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez at light heavyweight when he wins all the belts.
In an interview with The Ring magazine, Benavidez commented that Canelo Alvarez only fights for greatness, so he should seek a duel with him after he defeats Dmitry Bivol and becomes undisputed.
“After everything that has happened in my career, I am in a great position in every way. I was not going to go down to 168, but now, if Canelo wants to move up, I have the WBC world title at 175 pounds, and after beating Bivol I will have all the titles and when that happens I will be the one with the power. Canelo said he only fights for greatness, that he fights for titles. Well, let me collect all the titles and come back to the table to talk,” he said.
For three years David Benavidez was the official challenger and looked for every possible way to get the attention of the four-division Mexican champion, but never got an answer. In addition, the Guadalajara native made it a condition that he would accept the fight if he was offered a purse of $200 million dollars and with a rehydration clause because he believes that his rival could have an advantage in weight.
The Mexican Monster agreed to receive the minimum purse of the duel and that the Guadalajara native would keep almost all of the earnings with the intention of giving him the opportunity, but he continued to ignore him and complained about the way Benavidez asked for the fight.
The Mexican American chose to move up to 175 pounds, became mandatory challenger and then World Boxing Council (WBC) champion after Dmitry Bivol relinquished the belt to complete the trilogy with Artur Beterbiev. For now, Benavidez will face Anthony Yarde on November 22 to defend his position and then hopes to fight the Russian.
On the other hand, Canelo Alvarez has been criticized in recent years for choosing opponents from smaller weight classes or those he can beat. In fact,In his recent fight against Terence Crawford, who moved up two weight classes to face him, he lost his undisputed 168-pound championship.
David Benavidez, 29, won the WBA regular 175-pound belt from David Morrell after defeating him on the judges' scorecards. The Mexican Monster has a record of 30 wins, 24 of them by knockout, and no losses in his professional career.
Meanwhile, Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez, 34, lost his undisputed 168-pound championship to Crawford in a historic fight. The Mexican now has a record of 63 wins (39 by knockout), three losses, and two draws in his professional career.
