Former goalkeeper of the Mexican National Team in trouble after not finding a team
Julio Gonzalez went from glory to hell in the last 18 months, because after playing with Mexico in the Copa America he now can't find a team
Julio Gonzalez, in the last two years, has gone from the excitement of defending Mexico's goal in the last Copa America in the United States in 2024 to not finding a team before the start of the Clausura 2026 tournament nor any offers after not being included in the plans with the Puebla club.
For Gonzalez, everything has come crashing down. After his highly publicized internal dispute with his teammate and fellow goalkeeper Gil Alcala before the start of the 2025 Clausura tournament, which cost him his place at Pumas UNAM, he gradually lost his starting role with Puebla until he was dropped from the starting lineup. The club opted to give the starting position to Ricardo Daniel Gutierrez rather than offer the veteran goalkeeper another chance.
Events piled up like a waterfall for the goalkeeper, who was born in 1991. Everyone was certain that Gonzalez could compete for a spot on the Mexican national team for the 2026 World Cup, but fate has turned against him, and now he faces a cruel reality of having no offers and seeing the end of his career just around the corner.
In mid-2024, things were looking very promising for him, as he had won the starting position at Pumas, leaving out of competition to Gil Alcala and being a fundamental part of the feline squad fighting hard in the playoffs and falling short in a spectacular game against Monterrey at Ciudad Universitaria in Mexico City.
A fight that “cut off” his legs
After the Apertura 2024 playoffs when Monterrey beat them 5-3 in their own stadium, a series of events unfolded that ended up related to crucifying him, because when he got involved in an argument with insults that escalated and were to the physical appearance of his teammate and fellow professional Gil Alcala, everyone on the team turned their backs on him.
His own teammates did not accept that type of behavior and after analyzing the matter, the directors led by Miguel Mejia Baron and the coach Gustavo Lema, They decided to thank both goalkeepers, thus beginning Julio Gonzalez's journey. But with his quality and ability, he received the opportunity to play with Puebla, but he never gained the coaches' confidence. First, Pablo Guede opted for Miguel Jimenez, and then Jesus Rodriguez. Things didn't improve at all with Hernan Cristante, as they chose Ricardo Daniel Gutierrez from Mazatlan FC, signaling Julio Gonzalez's fate. Currently, he is without a team and is considering retirement.
