Unstoppable Mexican: Isaac del Toro wins his fourth title in a week
“Torito” won the Trofeo Matteotti, which adds to the GP Industria, the Giro della Toscana and the Copa Sabatini in the last 7 days
Mexican Isaac del Toro (UAE Team Emirates) has confirmed his great form by scoring another victory, this time the 77th edition of the Trofeo Matteotti, with start and finish in Pescara and 195 kilometers of travel.
Del Toro, this week's winner of the GP Industria, the Giro della Toscana and the Sabatini Cup, has won four of the five Italian classics on the calendar, has now accumulated sixteen victories as a professional and achieved his 84th UAE victory of the season.
On this occasion he did not win alone, but demonstrated his terminal speed to lead the leading group and precede the Portuguese Rui Costa (EF Education-EasyPost) and the Spaniard Pau Miquel (Kern Pharma) to the finish line in Pescara.
The one-day competition, held this Sunday in Pescara, consisted of a 193-kilometer route divided into 12 laps of a demanding circuit. The course layout incorporated three short but challenging climbs on each lap – the Salita Tiberi (1km at 5%), the Colle Scorrano (1km at 5%), and the Montesilvano Colle (0.7km at 6%) – which took a significant toll on the field.
The start was marked by multiple breakaway attempts that were quickly brought under control. Riders such as Tyler Stites, Cedrik Bakke Christophersen, Samuele Zoccarato, and Marc Cabedo all failed to establish themselves due to the intense pace set by the Astana, Cofidis, and Bardiani teams.
By the halfway point, a group of 16 riders had taken a slight advantage, including Alessandro Covi, Lorenzo Milesi, and Samuele Battistella. However, the gap never reached ninety seconds and, after a lack of coordination, they were once again absorbed by the peloton.
With 60 kilometers to go, a group of five riders - Frederik Wandahl, Stefano Oldani, Benjamin Thomas, Mathieu Burgaudeau and Mattia Gaffuri - managed to open up a lead of more than two minutes. However, the pursuit of the main group managed to close the gap, and with less than 20 kilometers to go,The peloton caught up with the breakaways.
The final sprint came in the final 11 kilometers, when a group of favorites broke away from the rest. Isaac del Toro remained in that group alongside riders like Richard Carapaz, Davide Formolo, Christian Scaroni, and Rui Costa. The race became more intense in the final stretch after an attack by Formolo and Sylvain.
On the final climb to Montesilvano Colle, del Toro responded with a decisive move, joined by Scaroni and Alexandre Delettre. This effort allowed him to catch the leaders and form a quintet that would fight for victory in Pescara.
In the final kilometers, del Toro showed his strength in the small leading group and launched his final attack. The Mexican arrived at the finish line in first place.
With this, Del Toro becomes the first Mexican to win this race, replacing Venezuelan Orluis Aular in his list of achievements.
