The Mexico vs. Ghana match to be played in Puebla to take advantage of similar altitude to Mexico City
Mexico will host Ghana at the Cuauhtemoc Stadium in Puebla on May 22, one day after the Tricolor's pre-World Cup schedule was announced
Twenty-four hours after Ghana was announced as Mexico's opponent for May 22, it was confirmed this Wednesday that the match will be played at the Cuauhtemoc Stadium in the city of Puebla, to take advantage of its altitude, which is almost the same as Mexico City.
The city of Puebla has an altitude of 2,135 meters above sea level, while The capital of the Republic, where the Mexican national team will debut against South Africa in the 2026 World Cup, has an altitude of 2,240 meters, that is, only 135 meters less than the Aztec metropolis. For this reason, this stadium was chosen, even though the pitch is still not in optimal condition. Those in charge of making the official announcement about the venue for this match were the national team coach Javier Aguirre, accompanied by Ivar Sisniega, executive president of the Mexican Football Federation, and Duilio Davino, sporting director of The National Teams and Alejandro Armenta, Governor of Puebla.
This match will be the start of the final three games in the last phase of preparation for the Mexican National Team, which will begin precisely with this match against the African team. The aim is for the squad led by Javier Aguirre to become familiar with the African style of play they will face in their World Cup debut match on June 11 against South Africa.
The other two scheduled matches are against Australia on May 30 in Pasadena, California, where Mexico will bid farewell to Mexican fans in the United States with a thank-you match for their unconditional support during the 48 matches played in the 2022-2026 World Cup qualifying process in the United States.
The third match will be against Serbia at a venue to be determined in Mexico on June 4, a week before their World Cup debut. Javier Aguirre will essentially finalize the starting lineup for the opening match against Bafana Bafana at Estadio Azteca.
Mexico returns to play in this stadium after drawing with Valencia of Spain on October 12, 2014, in a match featuring players from Liga MX.They now return to this venue, which hosted matches such as Italy vs. Argentina during the 1986 World Cup.
Positive record against Ghana
The Mexican National Team has faced Ghana four times in friendly matches, with a favorable record of four wins, six goals for, and only one against. The African team has participated in four World Cups: Germany 2006, South Africa 2010, Brazil 2014, and Qatar 2022. The "Black Stars" failed to qualify for Russia 2018. The Ghanaian national team has played a total of 15 matches in World Cup tournaments, winning five, drawing three, and losing seven. For the 2026 World Cup, which will be held in three countries for the first time in history—the United States, Mexico, and Canada—Ghana was placed in Group L and will face Panama on June 17, England on June 23, and will close out the group stage on June 27.
