Miguel Herrera is against the ropes, but doesn't deny the result
Costa Rica tied 0-0 with Honduras in a key match. Miguel Herrera reacted to the tie that complicates the Costa Rican aspirations
The Costa Rican national team still cannot get its first victory in this phase of the qualifiers for the 2026 World Cup. In their match at the General Francisco Morazan Stadium, the Ticos did not go beyond a 0-0 draw. Miguel Herrera admits he's not too worried about his players' performance.
Miguel Herrera acknowledged that the Costa Rican team's intention was to win the match in Honduras. However, the plan didn't go as expected. In fact, the Costa Rican team didn't have much initiative when it came to take control of the match.
"We came to win, with an orderly approach; we had it, but it didn't work. The draw isn't bad either; it helps strengthen our morale, and the boys' work was good (...) We didn't suffer, and they, in desperation, started shooting from very far away," Herrera said after the match.
Costa Rica handed the ball to the home team. "Piojo" wanted to take all three points, but that's a difficult objective when your team only has one shot on goal in the entire match. The only positive aspect is that the Costa Ricans were able to keep a clean sheet for the first time in this round.
“We continue to depend on what we do and we are forced to get results, since we lost points in previous matches,” added the Mexican strategist.
All we need is a win
After three matches, Costa Rica has three draws. The Costa Rican team fell to third place in Group C with three points. The surprise leader is Haiti with points, tied with Honduras. The Costa Rican team continues to depend on itself, but victories would be the only ally for “Piojo” and his players.
“We are forced to win to get into the fight with Honduras and Haiti (…) I think tactically we did a good job. During the week we did things well to try to achieve what we did; it was a very hard-fought match,” he concluded.
