South Korean Heung-Min Son warns Mexicans that they will hate him again
Son Heung-min, the South Korean star, assured that he feels empathy for the Mexican fans, but that on June 18 they will hate him again
The South Korean Heung-Min Son seeks to make Mexican fans angry again on the second date of the 2026 World Cup as he did eight years ago when he scored in the 90th minute 3 against Tricolor in the 2-1 defeat of the Asians and who will now meet for the third time in a World Cup tournament.
The South Korean recognizes that he has the sympathy of the Mexican fans, but that could change when he scores again in the duel in the city of Guadalajara, where both Mexicans and South Koreans will possibly define the pass to the next phase of the World Cup.
The empathy with the Mexicans goes back to the goal he scored in the 2-0 victory over Germany that allowed the Aztec team to advance to the next phase of the World Cup after they had lost 3-0 with Sweden and were practically in a coma.
Min Son knows that the Mexican fans have great affection for him, but in the same way he knows that this could change if they achieve a positive result in their confrontation in the group stage of the 2026 World Cup.
"I love the Mexican fans and the Mexican players. In the 2018 World Cup I faced them. Last year we played a friendly match against Mexico in Nashville. I think we have a great relationship, we are very respectful, but when we face each other, they will probably hate me again. But I will understand perfectly. That is why we love soccer," he commented in an interview with USA Today Sports.
He also accepted that it will be very difficult to play in Guadalajara, especially due to the altitude, which will be more than 1,500 meters above sea level.
"Mexico is going to be a little different due to the altitude, a difficult challenge; however, we are here to win. It is going to be tough; however, we will try to do our best. Mexico has an incredible fan base, incredible players and the altitude will probably benefit them too," he concluded.
