Surprise at Roland Garros: Jannik Sinner, world No. 1, falls in the second round
Sinner was eliminated after a shocking comeback by the Argentine, in a match marked by the Italian's physical problems.
The Italian Jannik Sinner, current world number 1, was eliminated in the second round of Roland Garros after losing to the Argentine Juan Manuel Cerúndolo 3-6, 2-6, 7-5, 6-1 and 6-1, in one of the most unexpected results of the Parisian tournament.
The Italian tennis player arrived as the great favorite for the title, driven by a streak of 30 consecutive victories and benefited by the absence of the Spanish Carlos Alcaraz, defending champion and Sinner's executioner in last season's final.
Sinner dominated the match until his physical collapse
For more than two and a half sets, Jannik Sinner showed a solid level and seemed headed for a smooth victory. The Italian even had a 5-1 lead in the third set, at which point he began to show physical discomfort.
The number 1 in the ATP ranking began to show signs of exhaustion and difficulties moving on the Paris clay. Although he initially seemed to suffer from hip discomfort, the high temperatures could also have influenced his physical decline.
Cerúndolo took advantage of the Italian's downturn and began to tilt the match in his favor. The Argentine managed to break Sinner's serve for the first time and gained emotional momentum in a match that seemed completely lost.

In the middle of the third set, Sinner requested medical assistance and momentarily left the court to be treated in the locker room with his medical team. Upon his return, the Italian looked visibly affected and lacked the energy to sustain the pace of the match.
Meanwhile, Juan Manuel Cerúndolo maintained the intensity and took the match to the fifth set against an increasingly physically limited opponent.
The Italian left the court again before the final set, but recovery never came. During the final stretch of the match, Sinner constantly sought oxygen, used a ventilator during breaks and showed obvious signs of exhaustion.
Cerúndolo, aware of the situation, kept up the pressure and ended up sealing a resounding victory at Roland Garros.

The Argentine will now face the winner of the duel between the Spanish Martín Landaluce and the Czech Vit Kopriva.
Jannik Sinner denies that heat was the main cause
After the game, Jannik Sinner ruled out that the heat was the main reason for his physical collapse and assured that the problems began in the morning.
"I woke up as if I had hit a wall. Although I was playing fantastic tennis, today I simply couldn't find the strength," declared the Italian after the defeat against Juan Manuel Cerúndolo, discarding the version that the heat overwhelmed him.
The unexpected elimination of the world number 1 leaves the panorama completely open at Roland Garros, a tournament in which he started as the top candidate for the title.
