Toluca conquers Concacaf and adds another international title after beating Tigres on penalties
Antonio Mohamed's Red Devils defeated Tigres in a dramatic shootout from eleven steps and lifted their third Concacaf Champions Cup
Toluca once again celebrated on the international stage. The team led by Antonio Mohamed was proclaimed champion of the Concacaf Champions Cup after beating Tigres de la UANL 6-5 in the penalty shootout, after an intense 1-1 draw in the 120 minutes played at the Nemesio Díez stadium.
With this result, the Red Devils won their third title in the region's top club competition and confirmed the great moment they are going through under the command of the Argentine strategist.
Toluca and Tigres starred in a final full of tension
The continental definition was marked by intensity and constant fight in the middle of the field, where both teams sought to impose conditions from the beginning.
The first clear opportunity was for Toluca, when the Brazilian Helinho recovered a ball and surprised with a lofted shot that forced the Argentine Nahuel Guzmán to make a key intervention to prevent his goal from falling.
Despite the approaches, neither team managed to break the tie during the 90 minutes of regulation, taking the final to extra time.
Jorge Díaz ahead of Toluca in extra time
During the first extra time, the scarlet team finally found the reward for their insistence.
At minute 104, Jorge Díaz received inside the area and defined with precision to beat Nahuel Guzmán, unleashing the euphoria of the local fans with the partial 1-0.
The goal seemed to bring Toluca closer to the continental title, but Tigres reacted in the most difficult moment.
Joaquim kept Tigres alive
As the clock approached the end of extra time, the Monterrey team found equality.
At minute 114, Brazilian defender Joaquim appeared inside the area to hit a header and send the ball into the back of the net, establishing the final 1-1 and forcing the championship to be decided from the penalty spot.
Before that, André-Pierre Gignac had had the cats' best chance in regulation time, but his shot a few meters from the goal was contained by the rival goalkeeper.

From the eleven steps, Toluca showed greater effectiveness and ended up tipping the balance in its favor.
The scarlet goals were the work of Pável Pérez, Santiago Simón, the Uruguayan Federico Pereira, Jorge Díaz, Sebastián Córdova and Fernando Arce.
The great figure of the definition was goalkeeper Luis García, who stopped two shots and was decisive in securing the championship.
For Tigres, André-Pierre Gignac, the Argentines Juan Brunetta and Ángel Correa, as well as Diego Lainez and the Brazilian Rómulo Zwarg, got it right.
However, the errors of the Uruguayan Fernando Gorriarán and Juan Purata ended up being decisive in the outcome of the final.
