Trump reiterates threat to withdraw Democratic cities as host cities for the World Cup due to “insecurity”
Donald Trump again threatened that he will pressure FIFA to withdraw the 2026 World Cup.
Thus, Boston becomes the third city of its kind to receive threats from the US president. Trump also stated that he would consider similar measures against Los Angeles for the 2028 Olympics due to potential safety concerns.
“If somebody is doing a poor job, and I perceive that the conditions are unsafe, I would call Gianni (Infantino), the president of FIFA (…) and say, ‘Let’s move it somewhere else,’” Trump told reporters.
“I could say the same thing about the Olympics, because, as you know, we have events in different places. The Olympics are held in Los Angeles. If I thought Los Angeles was not going to be well prepared, I would move it to another location,” the Republican president added.
Although Trump does not have the power to change a host or the location of a World Cup match, he maintains a very close relationship with Infantino, who does.
Trump’s words were mainly directed at the city of Boston, whose mayor is Democrat Michelle Yu, and which in recent months has found itself at the point of The administration is scrutinizing its immigration policies.
According to FIFA's schedule, Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, adjacent to Boston, is scheduled to host seven matches in the World Cup, which will be played between June 11 and July 19 of next year.
These threats are in addition to those launched in September against other cities governed by Democrats, such as Seattle and San Francisco, from which it warned that it could withdraw matches from the 2026 World Cup if it considers them unsafe.
