Michael Rubin Equates Pakistan Army Chief Asim Munir with Osama Bin Laden After Pahalgam Attack
Ex-Pentagon official Michael Rubin compares Pakistan Army Chief Asim Munir to Osama Bin Laden, urging the U.S. to designate Pakistan as a state sponsor of terrorism following the Pahalgam attack.
In the wake of the recent terrorist attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, former Pentagon official and senior fellow at the American Enterprise Institute, Michael Rubin, has drawn a stark comparison between Pakistan’s Army Chief, General Asim Munir, and the late Al-Qaeda leader, Osama Bin Laden. Rubin’s remarks underscore a growing international concern over Pakistan’s alleged role in sponsoring terrorism.
Rubin’s Controversial Comparison
Speaking to ANI, Rubin stated, “The only difference between Osama Bin Laden and Asim Munir is that Osama Bin Laden lived in a cave and Asim Munir lives in a palace, but beyond that, the two are the same, and their end should also be the same.” He further emphasized that superficial changes cannot mask the true nature of an entity, saying, “You can put lipstick on a pig, but it’s still a pig. You can pretend that Pakistan isn’t a terror sponsor, but it remains a terror sponsor, no matter how much we try to normalize it.”
Call for U.S. Action
Rubin urged the United States to formally designate Pakistan as a state sponsor of terrorism and to label General Asim Munir as a terrorist. He drew parallels between the Pahalgam attack and the October 7, 2023, Hamas assault on Israel, highlighting that both targeted peaceful civilians—liberal Jews in Israel and middle-class Hindus in India. Rubin asserted that such attacks are not spontaneous but are orchestrated to divert attention from significant events, referencing the timing of the Pahalgam attack coinciding with U.S. Vice President JD Vance's visit to India.
Implications for India-Pakistan Relations
Rubin’s statements have intensified the discourse on Pakistan’s involvement in cross-border terrorism. He suggested that India should adopt a strategy similar to Israel’s response to Hamas, advocating for decisive action against Pakistan’s Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI). Rubin stated, “It’s time to wipe out the leadership of the ISI, to treat them as a designated terror group, and demand that every country that is an ally of India do the same.”
Michael Rubin’s comparison of General Asim Munir to Osama Bin Laden and his call for stringent actions against Pakistan highlight the escalating tensions following the Pahalgam attack. As international scrutiny intensifies, the onus is on global powers to address the challenges posed by state-sponsored terrorism and to support efforts aimed at ensuring regional stability and security.
