An autonomous vehicle operated by Cruise AV ran over a pedestrian in San Francisco, a US city. Just before this, the victim woman had collided with another car. The woman was rescued from under the self-driving vehicle by officers and is now suffering multiple life-threatening injuries. The incident has raised concerns about the future of autonomous vehicles and how they will handle future incidents.

According to officials, a human-driven vehicle hit the pedestrian and fled the scene. The impact pushed the man directly in front of an autonomous cruise vehicle, which then passed over the woman and came to rest on top of her.

However, Cruz quickly issued a statement explaining how the car was not at fault for the initial contact with the victim. "The initial impact was severe and the pedestrian ended up directly in front of the AV. The AV then applied brakes aggressively to mitigate the impact. The driver of the other vehicle fled the scene," it said.

A witness submitted a photo to local media showing the AV stopping at the woman's leg as she lay beneath him. Firefighters contacted Cruz to disable the vehicle and then lifted the vehicle to rescue the woman. Although initial contact with the woman could not be avoided, Evie eventually landed on her feet. This shows that there is still room for improvement in the way AVs operate.

Cruise, on the other hand, has said that it is cooperating with local law enforcement by providing footage and applicable data of the accident. It further said that it was possible that there was no way to avoid the accident due to its unexpected nature.
