The incident comes amid a surge in cases of subway surfing, a risky and illegal practice that involves riding on moving cars.
A 15-year-old teenager died early Friday morning after being found unconscious on the roof of a subway car at the Queensboro Plaza station in New York.
City police were alerted around 2:47 am and found the boy unresponsive. He was immediately taken to a nearby hospital, where his death was confirmed. Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances of the case.
The incident comes amid a rise in cases of “subway surfing,” a risky and illegal practice that involves riding on moving cars. Although the practice dates back decades, it has gained momentum in recent years, fueled by viral videos on social media.
The Metropolitan Transit Authority (MTA) has asked digital platforms to remove content that promotes this practice and has launched awareness campaigns, in addition to using drones to detect those who defy the law by climbing on the roofs of trains.
