Sheriff deputy shot dead after responding to report of fireworks in Kansas
The victim was identified as 30-year-old Brandon Gaede, a deputy with the Phillips County Sheriff Office.
A Phillips County sheriff's deputy was shot dead Friday night while responding to a call about illegal fireworks in this small town near the Kansas-Nebraska border. The shooter also died in the incident.
The victim was identified as 30-year-old Brandon Gaede, a deputy with the Phillips County Sheriff's Office. Gaede was taken to a hospital after the shooting, where he was pronounced dead, the sheriff's office said.
According to the Sedgwick County Sheriff's Office investigation, Gaede responded to a home in Phillipsburg after a report of illegal fireworks. There he encountered 27-year-old resident Kolton Griffith, the alleged perpetrator of the detonation of the devices.
When Gaede developed probable cause to arrest Griffith and attempted to place him in handcuffs, a struggle ensued during which Griffith pulled out a concealed weapon and fired at the officer, authorities said.
Despite being shot, Gaede fought off the attack and struck Griffith multiple times, killing him at the scene.
"We are deeply saddened by the loss of Deputy Gaede, who gave his life in the line of duty," the Phillips County Sheriff's Office said in a statement.
Phillipsburg, population about 2,000, is located about 20 miles (30 kilometers) from the Nebraska border. The case remains under investigation.
