EE.UU. Sanctions UN Rapporteur Francesca Paola Albanese for Anti-Israel Stance
The Trump administration sanctioned a UN human rights official for her reporting on Israeli abuses in the Palestinian territories
Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced new sanctions Wednesday against Francesca Albanese, a senior UN Human Rights Council official who has criticized Israel’s Gaza offensive, alleging that the human rights expert has spearheaded a “campaign of political and economic warfare against the United States and Israel.”
UN Human Rights Council Special Rapporteur Francesca Albanese called on the International Criminal Court (ICC) to “investigate and prosecute corporate executives and/or entities” and denounced war crimes perpetrated by Israel in the context of its war with Hamas.
In the report titled “From the Economics of Occupation to the Economics of Genocide,” which was presented to the UN Human Rights Council on June 3, Albanese identified 48 corporate actors from arms manufacturers to financial firms who are accused ??to profit from its cooperation with the Israeli government.
Secretary of State Marco Rubio called Albanese’s efforts to push for criminal prosecution of Israel by the ICC and others “illegitimate and shameful” in a statement.
“The United States will continue to take the actions it deems necessary to respond to lawfare and protect our sovereignty and that of our allies,” Rubio said.
The U.S. Justice Department’s Task Force on Combating Antisemitism urged the U.N. to remove her, citing what it called Albanese’s “selective silence and outrage.”
The State Department’s decision to sanction Francesca Albanese, the U.N. special rapporteur for the West Bank and Gaza, comes after a U.S. pressure campaign to force the international body to remove her from her post failed.
Albanesa, a lawyer for human rights, has openly denounced what he described as the “genocide” that Israel is perpetrating against Palestinians in Gaza. Both Israel and the United States, which provides military support, have flatly denied the accusation.
