Alarms began to sound on cell phones, and seconds later the movement was felt in several regions
Just two days into 2026, Mexico experienced its first earthquake of the year on Friday morning.
At 7:58 am. The alarms began to sound on cell phones, alerting the population to take the necessary precautions. About 10 seconds later, it was felt in different regions, including the state of Guerrero (where the epicenter was located), Morelos, the State of Mexico, and Mexico City, among others. Shortly after, the National Seismological Service announced that the earthquake had a preliminary magnitude of 6.5, 15 km southwest of San Marcos, Guerrero. Following the activation of the Seismic Alert, the Secretariat of Citizen Security initiated the security protocol in the nation's capital with the overflight of 5 helicopters, detecting so far only some power outages. Likewise, Civil Protection protocols were activated in the 125 municipalities of the State of Mexico, without any damage having been detected so far. The morning press conference of President Claudia Sheinbaum was suspended halfway through, upon hearing the Seismic alert. Both the president and the reporters left the hall where the event was taking place. Minutes later, the president thanked the public for remaining calm and following the instructions of the authorities. “Thank you all for staying calm, you behaved wonderfully,” she said.
