Garbage rates increase in Los Angeles after 17 years
The Los Angeles City Council voted on the garbage collection increase, which takes effect 30 days after being signed by the mayor.
With 11 votes in favor and 2 against, the Los Angeles City Council authorized the increase of residents' garbage collection fees for the first time in 17 years, to offset the rising costs associated with the waste management business, city officials said.
The The fee increase will take effect 30 days after Mayor Karen Bass signs the ordinance, impacting an estimated 743,000 households and an additional 474,000 residences that receive bulky item collection services.
With the adjustment, fees for single-family homes and duplexes will increase 54 percent, from $36.32 to $55.95, and for apartments with three or four units, fees will increase 130 percent, from $24.33 to $55.95.
