Google Wallet launches features for stress-free travel this summer vacation
Google Wallet launches features for frequent travelers with automatic passes, mileage programs and luggage tags directly from your boarding pass
At Google I/O 2026, Google announced a series of improvements to Google Wallet designed for the most chaotic moments of air travel. And they came at just the right time, with the start of the summer season and Memorial Day weekend as a backdrop.
Auto Linked Passes, the big change for frequent travelers
The most relevant feature of this update is called Auto Linked Passes, and what it does is simple but powerful: it automatically adds related passes to your Google Wallet without you having to search for them or install anything extra.
Until now, organizing your digital travel documents was a manual and scattered task. With this feature, the process becomes proactive.
Azul Airlines in Brazil sends boarding passes directly to its passengers' Google Wallet after they check-in, whether by app, web or at the airport. What we see here is a bid to reduce that classic friction of searching for the email with the PDF of the boarding pass when the line does not wait.
Baggage and offers linked to your boarding pass
Auto Linked Passes go beyond the boarding pass. The feature can also send the traveler their digital luggage tag directly in the app, eliminating the need to print documents or rely on airport kiosks.
And here's something few people expected: the system can also alert you to offers linked to your boarding pass or loyalty card. This is an integration that, without being intrusive, turns your Wallet into something closer to a travel assistant than a simple digital wallet.
That's quite a jump compared to how this worked just a year ago, when Google Wallet was basically a static container for cards.
Join mileage programs directly from the boarding pass
Another new and very practical feature is the ability to sign up for an airline's frequent flyer program directly from your boarding pass in Google Wallet, without having to search for the airline's app on your own.
Gokmen Goksel, tech lead at Google Wallet, summed it up this way: “We want to make traveling feel less stressful and less disconnected, and be with travelers throughout their journey.”
Google presents you with the option just when you are most interested, which is when you have the boarding pass in hand and you have just remembered that you never signed up for the miles program. It's smart marketing disguised as utility, and in this case, it works in the user's favor.
All of this is in addition to the Live Updates for flight tracking that Google added just a month ago, with persistent notifications on the lock screen and always-on screen. The direction is clear.
What is Auto Linked Passes in Google Wallet? It's a feature that automatically adds related passes to your Google Wallet, such as boarding passes, luggage tags, and airline offers, without you having to do them manually. Azul Airlines in Brazil already uses it to send boarding passes after check-in.
How do I join a miles program from Google Wallet? With the new update, when you have a boarding pass saved in Google Wallet, the app directly shows you the option to enroll in that airline's frequent flyer program, without having to download another app or search for it on your own.
When are these Google Wallet features for travel coming? Google announced these improvements during a developer session at Google I/O 2026. The Auto Linked Passes feature is already live with Azul Airlines in Brazil, and more airlines are expected to adopt the integration soon.
The next few weeks will tell which other airlines are joining Auto Linked Passes. If you travel often, it's worth having Google Wallet updated and set up. Do you already save your boarding passes digitally?
