ICE releases a nun it had detained without reason while mass was being said
For no apparent reason, the Immigration and Customs Enforcement Service deprived the nun Leticia Ugboaja of her freedom for nearly 48 hours.
Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) released a Nigerian Catholic nun who was detained for no good reason on Sunday while walking in her habit on the street in McAllen, Texas.
A few kilometers from the border between the United States and Mexico, the nun Leticia Ugboaja, a member of the Daughters of Mary Mother of Mercy, was heading towards the church of Our Lady of Sorrows in McAllen, Texas, when she was surprised during an ICE operation, because for no reason she ended up being deprived of her freedom.
Upon learning what happened, those responsible for their congregation announced the incident on social networks, a situation that generated outrage among some members of Congress.
One of the first voices to repudiate the action of ICE was Republican Monica de la Cruz who, as representative of the 15th congressional district of Texas, demanded to repair the error by releasing the nun who is also a registered nurse at South Texas Health System.
Despite pressure from public opinion, the immigration agents did not agree immediately and it was until about 48 hours later when the nun Leticia Ugboaja managed to regain her freedom.
“We appreciate the quick response of local representatives who contacted the Department of Homeland Security to secure his release,” wrote Brenda Riojas, spokesperson for the Diocese of Brownsville, in a brief statement.
Upon Donald Trump's return to the US presidency, he launched an immigration policy aimed at carrying out the largest deportation of foreigners lacking legal status established in US territory.
Under this approach, ICE operations not only extended to states far from the border, but are now carried out in places where they were not previously registered, as is the case of cities considered sanctuary for immigrants and even in places such as hospitals, schools and even near churches.
Although a large sector of citizens opposes this type of actions, the nation's president insists that, as his administration progresses, the number of express arrests and deportations will increase.
