Members of the National Guard from Texas and California will leave Portland and Chicago
Federalized National Guard troops arrived in Portland and Chicago but were never deployed
The 200 members of the California National Guard, federalized and sent to Portland, Oregon, and another 200 members of the Texas National Guard, federalized and sent to Chicago, will return to their home states, according to two officials cited by ABC News.
The federalized National Guard troops arrived in those cities in early October, but they were never deployed operationally due to legal challenges that are still pending in the courts.
On Friday night, US Northern Command said changes were coming to the mission of the federal troops in those cities, but did not provide details, posting on October and placed on active duty under Title 10.
President Donald Trump ordered the deployment of the military in response to what he described as an attack on federal Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents in those cities.
While they were deployed to the two cities, the troops never conducted operations due to several courts rulings that suspended their deployment.
These Troops will now return to their home states of Texas and California. California will maintain a 100-member National Guard force on alert, while Texas will maintain a force of 200 members who volunteered for the mission, according to one of the officials.
