Mexico reaches an agreement with the US related to water management in the Rio Bravo basin
Mexico committed to supplying the United States with 249.163 million cubic meters of water as stipulated in the historic 1944 Water Treaty
The Mexican government committed to the United States to cover the water deficit it has with Texas as part of the 1944 Water Treaty, which will benefit American farmers and ranchers as demanded by President Donald Trump.
Until a few days ago, the Republican president asserted that his southern neighbor had violated the points established in the historic agreement, jeopardizing the agriculture and livestock of the "Lone Star" state, and demanded that he take action immediately.
In response, through a statement issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (SRE), the Mexican government denied having violated any part of the Treaty and stated that during the last year it has made additional water deliveries in accordance with current hydrological availability, operational limits, and the region's infrastructure, without affecting the human right to water, domestic consumption, or agricultural production on the border.
Under this guideline, it will release 249.163 billion cubic meters of water to the US, with deliveries scheduled to begin the week of December 15.
Brooke L. Rollins, Secretary of Agriculture, thanked the The US government thanked the Mexican government for complying with the 1944 Treaty, but reminded that, should it fail to do so, tariffs would be imposed on imports of its products destined for the United States. "I thank Mexico for its willingness to comply with the treaty and return to fulfilling its previous obligations. Mexico has supplied more water in the last year than in the previous four years combined. While this is a step in the right direction, President Trump has been very clear: if Mexico continues to fail to meet its commitments, the United States reserves the right to impose a 5% tariff on Mexican goods," the US said in another statement. According to the 1944 Water Treaty, Mexico retains two-thirds of the main flow of the Rio Grande and cedes the remainder to the United States, which cannot be less than approximately 432 million cubic meters (Mm3) annually. In return, the United States must deliver 1,850 Mm3 of the Colorado River to Mexico each year.
