Parents detained by ICE in Arizona struggle to say goodbye to their son with terminal cancer
Parents of Kevin González, a young man with terminal cancer, are detained and are fighting to be able to say goodbye to their son on time
Some immigrant parents who are in the custody of the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) in Arizona live mome anguish, as they ask to be released to see their son Kevin González, who is fighting stage 4 colon cancer.
Kevin's parents crossed into the U.S. to arrive in Chicago, where their son was stayed, but then decided to return to Mexico, before the authorities no longer allowed him to travel due to his deteriorating health.
His parents, arrested in Arizona after trying to cross the border from Mexico, are seeking to be with him in their last days of life.
Kevin was interned in Chicago
Kevin, 18 , recorded an emotional message for his parents from his room in the University of Chicago Medical Center to say goodbye to his parents.
“I just want to tell you that I love you. I miss you. And you will always have an angel in heaven to take care of you.” The recording was made with the help of his brother, Jovany Ramirez.
Kevin González returned to Mexico
The young man traveled shortly to Mexico, while his parents remain detained in the Florence Correctional Center, Arizona.
They were arrested last month while trying to enter the United States after their humanitarian visa application was rejected. Their lawyer has recommended they plead guilty is in the judicial hearing scheduled for this Thursday, but it is still unknown whether the judge will allow his release or deportation to Mexico before his 30 day sentence ends.
Diagnosed with cancer
Kevin, who was born in Chicago, but lived much of his life in Mexico, was diagnosed with cancer after falling ill during a visit to family in the city during last Christmas. His condition has become worse and his family describes that he has stopped eating and drinking, raising the urgency of the situation.
The Consulate General of Mexico in Tucson has confirmed that it maintains contact with the parents' lawyers and supervises consular assistance, providing follow-up to the repatriation process.
Joaquín Catro asks ICE to release the parents of Kevin González
US legislator Joaquín Castro spoke on the case, emphasizing the humanitarian urgency.
“Kevin González is only 18 years old. He has stage 4 colon cancer and has days to live. He is desperate for spend his last moments with his parents, but ICE detained his mom and dad after they tried to apply humanitarian asylum. This is the total cruelty of the mass deportation machine. I ask that Kevin's parents be immediately released so that they can be with their son”, the representative highlights in his social network account.
The case has generated media attention and community support, as the family hopes that authorities will allow the reunion before it's too late.
