Prince Andrew says goodbye to his royal titles: what led him to do it?
Prince Andrew, Duke of York, announced in a statement that he will no longer use his title, and his wife has also been stripped of them.
Prince Andrew, Duke of York, announced that he will no longer use his title and all the royal honors bestowed upon him, in a decision made after discussions with King Charles III and other members of the royal family.
In a statement issued by Buckingham Palace on October 17, Andrew affirmed that his continued As a titled figure, it distracts from Her Majesty's work and the institution. "I have chosen, as always, to put my duty to my family and my country first," he declared.
Although he had already withdrawn from public life in 2019 following the scandal surrounding his links to sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, the prince retained certain titles, including the Duke of York, and other noble and military honors. Now, with the King's consent, he voluntarily renounces them all, although legally an Act of Parliament is still required to formally withdraw them.
Since 2022, Andrew no longer used the style "His Royal Highness," and his exclusion from public events was made clear during Queen Elizabeth II's funeral, where he was not allowed to wear a military uniform. This new step marks his almost total disengagement from institutional life.
The accusations about Prince York
The prince repeatedly denied accusations of sexual abuse by Virginia Giuffre, with whom he reached an out-of-court settlement in 2022. Despite having kept a low profile in recent years, recent reports and leaked emails have revived scrutiny over his relationship with Epstein, which may have influenced this latest decision.
His ex-wife, Sarah Ferguson, will also stop using the title of Duchess of York officially, although the two will continue to reside together at Royal Lodge on the Windsor Castle estate.
While his daughters, Princesses Beatrice and Eugenie, will retain their titles, Andrew has been excluded from key royal events, such as Christmas celebrations, by decision of King Charles, in an effort to protect the image of the institution.
With this decision,Prince Andrew is moving further away from the active core of the British royal family, in what appears to be the definitive end of his public life as a member of the royal family.
