DHS Warned of Disclosure of Confidential Information and Growing Threats Against Federal Law Enforcement Officers That Put Them in Danger
The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) condemned the “dangerous” disclosure of personal information about immigration agents and their families, while the agency urges moderation of the widespread and growing rhetoric emanating from “left-wing” politicians and media outlets.
“The men and women of ICE and CBP are Fathers and mothers, sons and daughters. They get up every morning trying to make our communities safer,” DHS Deputy Secretary Tricia McLaughlin said in a press release.
“Like everyone else, they just want to go home to their families at night. The violence and dehumanization of these men and women simply enforcing the law must stop,” McLaughlin said.
DHS says that not only have threats against its officers increased, but assaults have spiked 1,000 percent in recent months as the Trump administration continues its immigration crackdown.
The threatening incidents have taken the form of violent, profanity-laced voicemails and social media posts revealing the addresses of federal agents, leading to several arrests.
Three women were charged last month for allegedly harassing an ICE agent from the Center Los Angeles Civic Guard to his home. They livestreamed the wild chase on their Instagram accounts, while providing detailed instructions to their followers.
Upon arriving at the agent's home, they continued streaming while shouting to passersby that their “neighbor is ICE,” “La Migra lives here,” and “ICE lives on your street and you should know it.”
According to the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Central District of California, they publicly revealed the agent's address and encouraged viewers to “come over.”
On September 22, a 68-year-old man was arrested in San Diego after posting the address of an ICE attorney online and urging people to harass her, or even “hit her up.”a dangerous harassment tactic that involves making fake emergency calls to provoke an armed response from law enforcement.
A vile voicemail was addressed to the wife of a Texas ICE agent, comparing them to Nazis and openly threatening her family.
“I don’t know how you let your husband work for ICE and you sleep at night. Screw you, screw your family. I hope your kids get deported by accident. How do you sleep? Screw you. Did you hear what happened to the Nazis after World War II? Because that’s what’s going to happen to your family,” an unidentified woman said on the phone, her voice dripping with contempt.
The wife of another agent received a Facebook message from an account apparently with the sender’s full name, Robert Buckley, warning her, “Your Iceman husband is a scumbag and payback is coming sooner or later.”
“This “These kinds of threats against our brave ICE agents and their families are repugnant. These agents risk their lives daily to arrest murderers, pedophiles, rapists, terrorists, and gang members from our communities,” McLaughlin said, harshly criticizing the harassment campaigns. “Comparing ICE day in and day out to the Nazi Gestapo, the Secret Police, and slave patrols has consequences.” The agency’s work continues despite the hostile environment, with ICE on track to deport 600,000 migrants by 2025 and 457,000 illegal immigrant arrests since Trump took office for his second term, the statement said.
