In its triumphant return, Azul was unveiled at the 2025 Los Angeles Auto Show. For Volkswagen of America, this encounter marks not just another exhibition: it represents the culmination of a collective process that began amidst ashes and ended with a renewed symbol of unity.
A discovery that moved the world
Azul's story began to resonate internationally thanks to an image captured by the Associated Press. It showed the seemingly undamaged van parked in a Malibu neighborhood reduced to rubble. The sight was so striking that many began calling it the “magic bus,” a nickname that stuck with it throughout the year as its story spread across social media and news outlets. Intrigued by the enormous public interest, the Volkswagen enthusiast community mobilized to help identify the owner. Volkswagen of America then managed to contact Megan Weinraub, the owner and guardian of the T2, who had given up hope of finding her vehicle after the catastrophe. With her permission, the brand arranged access to the affected neighborhood and transported the minibus to the Volkswagen Group facility in Oxnard, a space known for housing a valuable collection of historic vehicles. From that first moment, Volkswagen understood that Azul's emotional value went far beyond the material. As Rachael Zaluzec explained,Senior Vice President of Brand Marketing and Customer Experience in North America: “Today marks the beginning of a new chapter in the rich legacy of the Microbus with the restoration of a vehicle that captured the attention of people around the world.” The executive added: “For Megan, Azul is not just a 1977 T2, but part of her family. For us, this passionate restoration project has been a symbol of resilience, making Azul part of the Volkswagen family as well.” A restoration process that respected every detail. The initial assessment made it clear that, despite its robust appearance, the van had suffered significant damage. Mechanically and structurally, it required extensive work. Even so, the Oxnard team didn't hesitate to take on the challenge. Since the beginning of the year, specialists began disassembling each component piece by piece, ensuring the preservation of the essence of the T2 from the late seventies. The restoration work included everything from the propulsion system to the interior elements, as well as a rigorous treatment of the bodywork. GE Kundensport, renowned for its projects with classic Porsche vehicles, participated in this final stage. Other partners contributed specific expertise in the engine, powder coatings, and final finishes. Gunnar Wynarski, a technician at the Oxnard plant, recalled the team's motivation: “From the moment we first saw Azul, our goal was to ensure that the vehicle's history wasn't erased by the fires, but rather brought back to life by restoring it, reuniting it with its owner, and returning it to the road.” He added: “While this special restoration project presented a technical challenge, the most important thing was to keep the essence of the vehicle intact.” An emotional return: With the restoration complete, Volkswagen wanted Azul's debut to have special significance. Therefore, its first public appearance was at the brand's official stand during the 2025 Los Angeles Auto Show. There, the minibus was reunited with Megan Weinraub, who experienced the moment with immense emotion. In her words, Azul's story ceased to be personal and became a shared phenomenon: “When Azul's photo went viral, I felt like the whole world shared a piece of my heart. And when Volkswagen contacted me to find out if Azul had survived, I was incredibly moved and couldn't believe it. Seeing it now, I feel it's an even greater symbol of hope than before.” Volkswagen took the opportunity to present a special collaboration with Candylab™, a brand known for its wood collections.Together they created a limited edition of the Azul model in white and blue tones, available exclusively during the auto show.
