Trump Administration sues Harvard over treatment of Jewish students and demands millions
The government is accusing Harvard of failing to protect Jewish students and is seeking to recover federal funds
The Trump administration escalated its confrontation with Harvard University by filing a federal lawsuit alleging antisemitism on campus. The legal action, brought by the Department of Justice (DOJ), seeks not only sanctions but also the recovery of billions of dollars in public funds. The lawsuit, filed in a Massachusetts court and reported by Reuters, alleges that the university did not take sufficient measures to protect Jewish and Israeli students from acts of discrimination. “The United States cannot and will not tolerate these failures,” states the official document, which accuses Harvard of violating federal civil rights laws. Harvard rejects accusations. The institution's response was immediate. In a statement, Harvard called the lawsuit political retaliation and defended its actions. “The university cares deeply about its Jewish and Israeli community and has taken substantial steps to combat antisemitism,” it said. Furthermore, the institution maintained that this offensive is part of an attempt by the administration to pressure elite universities that, according to the administration, are dominated by left-wing ideological positions. A conflict that has been brewing for months. The dispute is not new. In recent months, the Trump administration has cut more than $2.6 billion in research funding to Harvard, in addition to canceling federal contracts and limiting its capacity to admit international students. Economic settlements to resolve the conflict have even been explored. According to reports cited in media outlets such as The New York Times, a payment of up to $1 billion by the university to restore access to funding was discussed. However, the negotiations failed, leading to this new legal offensive. The case reopens the debate about how academic institutions handle discrimination allegations in an increasingly polarized political context. For now, the battle between the Trump administration and Harvard continues in the courts.
