The idea was born after several conversations between the vehicle owner and Frank Heyl, Bugatti's design chief. From there, the creative team began to develop a concept that mixed natural elegance, artisanal details and the brutal presence of the W16 Mistral.
A color that changes depending on the light
The first thing that catches your attention about the “Fly Bug” is its special finish called “Dragonfly Blue”. It is a paint capable of modifying its tones depending on the lighting and the angle from where the car is observed.
The effect is reminiscent of the wings of a dragonfly. In some moments the vehicle looks deep blue and in others a brighter turquoise hue appears.
Bugatti even applied that visual treatment on the rims to maintain the aesthetic coherence of the whole set.
Added to that is an elliptical graphic pattern that runs through a large part of the body. The design progressively increases towards the rear area. and it seems to disappear into the air intakes, generating a quite shocking visual sensation when the car is in motion.
An extremely complex craft work
One of the biggest challenges for the Sur Mesure team was integrating the traditional oval Bugatti emblem within the side graphic pattern.
Although it seems like a minor detail, the brand explained that it was necessary to perform multiple tests to ensure that the logo maintained the precision of its lines and proportions without breaking the overall design of the vehicle.
The final result leaves the feeling that each part of the car was designed as if it was part of a single artistic piece.
Bugatti had already explored similar ideas in other custom projects such as the Hellbug, Hellbee, and Lady Bug, although the Fly Bug takes that natural inspiration to another level.
The interior follows the same philosophy
Inside doors, the W16 Mistral “Fly Bug” maintains exactly the same visual language of the exterior. For this unit, Bugatti developed exclusive multilayer materials that mix premium leather, alcantara and three-dimensional geometric textures.
The patterns inspired by insect wings also appear on door panels, armrests and different surfaces in the cabin.
Another striking detail is the presence of the famous “Dancing Elephant” integrated in the gear selector. This historical figure pays homage to Rembrandt Bugatti, brother of founder Ettore Bugatti and renowned animal sculptor.
