Polestar says goodbye to the new car market in the US
New US restrictions will force Polestar to stop selling new vehicles starting with the 2027 model year
The electric vehicle industry in the United States is preparing for another major change. Polestar confirmed that it will stop marketing new cars in that country when the new federal regulations planned for the 2027 models come into effect.

The decision does not respond to a commercial problem or a drop in demand. The reason is related to the regulations promoted by the US government, which will limit the sale of vehicles with certain technological components or links with supply chains associated with China or Russia.

Despite this scenario, the company assured that it will maintain its commitment to current customers. The brand will continue to offer technical service, spare parts and after-sales service, in addition to selling the units that are still available in inventory.
A regulation that changes the landscape
The new provisions of the Department of Commerce seek to strengthen national security in connected vehicles. The regulations affect manufacturers whose models incorporate technologies or systems related to companies in China or Russia.
Polestar, backed by Volvo and the Geely Holding group, did not obtain the necessary authorization to continue marketing its models under this new regulatory framework. This situation will force the company to withdraw its offer of new vehicles once the restrictions come into force.
Volvo manages to move forward
Although Polestar and Volvo maintain a close business relationship, the outcome was different for both companies. Volvo received approval and will be able to continue selling its vehicles in the United States when the new rules begin to apply.
Other manufacturers are also working to adapt to this scenario. One of them is Ford, which seeks to maintain authorization to import the Lincoln Nautilus, an SUV produced in China that also falls under the scope of the new regulation.
Fewer options for buyers
Polestar's departure represents another adjustment for the US electric vehicle market, where some manufacturers have reduced investments or delayed the launch of new models due to uncertainty in the sector.
Como consecuencia, los consumidores tendrán un catálogo más limitado dentro del segmento eléctrico. At the same time, the measure could encourage greater local production, although American brands still do not have as wide an offering as that of several international manufacturers.
