Shooting at Kroger supermarket in Texas leaves two men seriously injured
They detained a suspect, who also suffered a gunshot wound, while they investigate whether the attack was related to a case of domestic violence
A shooting that occurred Wednesday afternoon at a Kroger supermarket in Cypress, northwest of Houston, left two men seriously injured and sparked intense police mobilization.
The Harris County Precinct 4 Constable's Office said it received a report of an active shooter around 3:00 p.m. in the store located in Fairfield Marketplace.
Authorities later confirmed that a suspect was detained and taken to a hospital for medical attention.
Two men were transported in serious condition
Upon arriving at the scene, officers found a man who had left the supermarket with a gunshot wound.
The victim was taken by helicopter to a hospital and remains in critical condition.
Inside the establishment, emergency crews located a second man with multiple gunshot wounds. He was also evacuated by air and his condition was reported as critical.
Sheriff Mark Herman later reported that the victim attacked by the suspect remained in serious condition.
He added that the alleged aggressor was one of the two people injured, after suffering a gunshot wound to the neck.
They are investigating whether the people involved knew each other.
Authorities indicated that witnesses observed an African-American man dressed in a yellow shirt and black pants shooting inside the supermarket.
However, investigators are analyzing versions that suggest that one of the two injured men would be the alleged shooter and that both people previously knew each other.
Sources cited by Fox News indicated that the incident had its origin in a situation of domestic violence.
For this reason, investigators specialized in family violence participate in the investigations along with the sheriff's office.
So far the identities of those involved have not been revealed and authorities reported that charges will be filed once the investigation is concluded.
Witness recounts moments of panic
Patrick Young, who was shopping at the supermarket when the attack began, said he initially thought it was a joke.
"I was putting food in the cart and I heard a scream that sounded strange. I thought it was some children playing inside the store," he said.
Shortly afterward he heard several gunshots coming from the back of the establishment.
“I turned around and ran in the opposite direction of the shots until I left through the front door along with many other people,” he said.
Young also highlighted the quick police response.
"There was no hesitation. They arrived and ran straight into the store," he said.
Kroger offers psychological support to its employees
In a statement, Kroger expressed its regret for what happened and confirmed that it is cooperating with authorities during the investigation.
The company reported that the store will remain closed while police process the scene and that it has activated psychological support services for its employees.
Likewise, he indicated that all queries related to the case will be answered by the authorities in charge of the investigation.
The Precinct 4 Sheriff's Office reported that, at this time, there is no threat to public safety, although it asked the population to avoid the area while the investigation continues.
Captain Juan Flores indicated that no customers or other bystanders were injured during the incident.
