Food prices in California could increase with the entry into force next month of taxes on non-renewable packaging, which could impact the cost of living for Californians.
Senate Bill 54, the Plastic Pollution Prevention and Packaging Producer Responsibility Act, passed in 2022, proposes to reduce single-use plastics and make all packaging sold in California recyclable or compostable by 2032.
California aims to achieve that goal by holding companies accountable for the types of materials that end up in the state's landfills.
