Mob Vandalises R.G. Kar Hospital Emergency Building During ‘Reclaim the Night’ Protest
Mob vandalises R.G. Kar Hospital emergency building amidst ‘Reclaim the Night’ protest against the Kolkata doctor’s rape-murder. Doctors express fear as political tensions rise with accusations against the ruling party.
The situation at R.G. Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata took a violent turn late last night when a mob vandalised the hospital’s emergency building during a “Reclaim the Night” protest. The protest was organized in response to the recent shocking rape and murder of a doctor, which has sparked widespread outrage across the city. As tensions escalated, doctors at the hospital expressed their fear and uncertainty, stating that they are ‘terrified’ for their safety.
The “Reclaim the Night” protest, which began as a peaceful demonstration, quickly descended into chaos as miscreants allegedly infiltrated the gathering. The protestors were demanding justice for the victim and calling for stronger safety measures for women, particularly those working in the medical profession. However, the situation spiraled out of control when a group of individuals began to vandalise the emergency department of R.G. Kar Hospital, causing significant damage to the property.
Leader of Opposition Suvendu Adhikari was quick to react, accusing the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) of orchestrating the violence. Adhikari claimed that the vandalism was carried out by ‘TMC goons’ who were sent by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee to disrupt the protest and intimidate the participants. “This was not a spontaneous act of violence; it was a premeditated attack by TMC goons to silence those who are demanding justice for the brutal crime committed against a doctor. Mamata Banerjee is responsible for this lawlessness,” said Adhikari.
The allegations have further heightened the political tensions in West Bengal, where the ruling TMC and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) are locked in a bitter rivalry. While the TMC has denied any involvement in the incident, the BJP has intensified its criticism of the state government, accusing it of failing to maintain law and order and protect the citizens. The incident has also raised concerns among the medical community, with many doctors now fearing for their safety in the wake of the attack.
Doctors at R.G. Kar Hospital, who witnessed the vandalism, expressed their deep concern and fear. “We are terrified,” said a senior doctor who wished to remain anonymous. “We came here to save lives, not to be caught in the middle of a political battle. The safety of healthcare workers should be a priority, but last night we felt completely abandoned.” The medical staff has demanded immediate action from the authorities to ensure their protection and to prevent such incidents from happening again.
The “Reclaim the Night” protest was intended to highlight the urgent need for justice and better safety measures for women, especially those in vulnerable professions like healthcare. However, the violence that ensued has overshadowed the protest’s message and has left the city grappling with the aftermath. The hospital management has filed a complaint with the police, and an investigation is underway to identify and apprehend those responsible for the vandalism.
As Kolkata wakes up to the news of the violence at R.G. Kar Hospital, the demand for justice for the slain doctor remains stronger than ever. The incident has not only exposed the deep-seated political divisions in the state but has also highlighted the need for greater security for those who work tirelessly to save lives. As the investigation continues, the people of Kolkata are left questioning the safety of their city and the effectiveness of their leaders in ensuring justice and security for all.
