Alabama boy dies in car seat while father went to buy alcohol
Logan Keith Chewning admitted to consuming alcohol several times during the day and believed the child was sleeping in his crib.
An Alabama man was arrested following the death of his one-year-old son.
Around 5:00 p.m. m. On May 20, authorities responded to reports from relatives that the lifeless body of a child was found, still strapped into his car seat, at a residence in Brookwood, Tuscaloosa County, ABC News and WBRC reported.
“The initial investigation indicates that the child remained in the vehicle for an extended period of time,” stated Captain Jack Kennedy of the Tuscaloosa County Sheriff's Office Violent Crimes Unit.
According to WBRC, the child was in the exclusive care of his father throughout the day, and temperatures reached 35 degrees Celsius that afternoon.
The father, identified as Logan Keith Chewning, admitted to consuming alcohol several times during the day, authorities said.
Chewning, 30, left his home at one point to buy more alcohol. “The father stated that he believed the child was sleeping in his crib, but that he must have been forgotten in the vehicle,” Kennedy said.
According to Tuscaloosa County Sheriff's Office records, Chewning has been charged with involuntary manslaughter.
He also has charges on file for possession of drug paraphernalia and second-degree possession of marijuana. At this time, it is unknown if these charges are related to his son's death.
