Miami FBI warns South Florida residents about rise in dating app thefts
The FBI recommends dating app users only meet in a safe location and be aware of their surroundings.
The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) issued a warning to South Florida residents following an increase in thefts through dating applications.
He noted that dating app scams have been around for years, but the recent trend is particularly dangerous because of the violence involved.
The FBI explained that the suspects contact the victim through a dating app to arrange a private date and then assault her.
He even detailed that in at least one of the reported cases the victim was forced to withdraw money from an ATM.
The FBI advises dating app users not to share their net worth, to only meet in a safe location and be aware of their surroundings, not to share personally identifiable information, and to be wary of unverified profiles.
“A criminal posing as someone seeking a romantic relationship can take advantage of a potential victim seeking a romantic relationship,” said Adam Berry, Assistant Special Agent in Charge of the FBI Miami Office.
"We urge those who use dating apps to protect themselves. Make sure you take precautions to avoid dangerous situations," he added.
