She denied her son vital medication until it caused liver failure: mother detained in Florida
Edmonde Devalon, 36, was arrested and charged with failing to provide her son with essential liver medication for at least six months
A South Florida woman faces charges of alleged child abuse with grievous bodily harm after authorities determined she stopped administering medication necessary for her teenage son's liver disease, which allegedly led to organ failure and the need for an urgent transplant.
Edmonde Devalon, 36, was arrested by the Miami-Dade County Sheriff's Office, which accuses her of failing to provide her 15-year-old son with prescribed treatment for at least six months. The son suffers from an unspecified liver disease.
“I knew it was necessary”
According to the probable cause affidavit, the young man suffered liver failure as a result of the lack of medication and required an immediate transplant.
After being informed of her Miranda rights, Devalon reported that she did not provide the treatment since the middle of last year because she felt overwhelmed by the number of children she has.
According to the police document, the accused acknowledged that she knew the medication was necessary and that the lack of it could endanger the teenager's life.
The file, filed on February 11, does not detail when the minor's health began to deteriorate or the exact date of the transplant. It also does not specify how the authorities became aware of the case or the young man's current condition.
Arrest and Legal Conditions
The alleged incident occurred at the defendant's residence located on NE 195th Street in Miami-Dade County.
Devalon was arrested on Tuesday and remains in the county jail on a $5,000 bond. If she posts bail, a judge ordered that she will only be allowed supervised contact with the victim.
The date of her next court appearance has not yet been announced, as the legal process continues.
