Through an account enabled on the GoFundMe platform, more than $454 thousand dollars have been raised for the family of the Mexican murdered by ICE
Through an account enabled on GoFundMe, a collective financing platform, more than $455,000 dollars have been raised for the family of Lorenzo Salgado Araujo, an immigrant murdered by an Immigration and Customs Enforcement Service (ICE) officer in Houston, Texas.
The incident occurred Wednesday around 7 a.m. during an attempted arrest at a traffic stop.
According to a statement released by the federal agency, the 52-year-old Mexican allegedly refused to cooperate with authorities during an immigration control operation.
“He rammed an ICE police vehicle, refused to obey multiple verbal commands, and used his vehicle as a weapon in an attempt to run over an ICE agent, causing our agent to fire his weapon in self-defense,” part of the letter states.
However, the murder of Salgado Araujo has caused outrage among the community, since the authorities' version seems to make no sense if one takes into account that the Mexican immigrant was in the process of obtaining legal status in the United States.
For this reason, groups defending foreigners lacking legal status and human rights organizations are requesting that the violent incident be thoroughly investigated to clarify what happened in Houston's East End, near Magnolia Park.
Meanwhile, the collaboration of people who wish to show solidarity with the family of the dead immigrant was requested to cover the expenses of his funeral, as well as to establish a fund that allows them to file a legal claim against ICE.
The goal is to raise half a million dollars through the campaign called “In memory of Lorenzo Salgado Araujo, 52 years old,” which is jointly promoted on GoFundMe by the League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC) and the Salgado Araujo family.
Less than 24 hours after an account was activated, more than 10 thousand donations were already collected with a contribution of more than $455,000 dollars.
It should be noted that Lorenzo Salgado Araujo was the owner of a construction company and the funds collected will be given directly to his widow and three children.
