Rebates of up to $2,750 to lower the electricity bill: who can request them
Hawaii Energy offers rebates of up to $2,750 to install efficient equipment and reduce your electric bill: requirements and how to apply
A new rebate program offers up to $2,750 to residents who make energy efficiency improvements to their homes. The aid can be used to install solar water heaters, more efficient air conditioners and other systems aimed at reducing electricity consumption.
The incentives are part of Hawaii Energy's 2026-2027 program and will be available through June 30, 2027, as long as funds remain. The amounts are granted on a first-come, first-served basis and, in many cases, are discounted directly at the time of purchasing or installing the equipment.
Who can receive a refund of up to $2,750
The maximum benefit corresponds to the installation of a solar water heater. Residential electricity users who live in:
Kauai residents do not qualify because that island is served by an independent electric cooperative. The program also requires using participating contractors when it comes to installations or technical services.
How much money does the program offer?
The main residential rebates are:
There are also discounts on whole house fans, solar attic fans, window air conditioners and energy-efficient LED lights.
How to request a refund
In the case of the solar heater, the applicant must find a Hawaii Energy-approved contractor, schedule the installation, and complete the work. The reimbursement is deducted directly from the final invoice and the contractor is responsible for submitting the documentation.
For heat pump heaters, the discount can be applied directly at participating retailers such as Home Depot, Lowe’s, Ferguson, PACE Supply and Inter-Island Solar Supply. Equipment must meet ENERGY STAR requirements and have eligible capacity.
How much can you save on electricity
Hawaii Energy notes that efficient water heating systems can reduce a home's electricity bill by up to 40%. Additionally, rebates can be combined with certain state tax credits, although tax eligibility should be verified with a professional.
The exact amount depends on the equipment, system size, location, and availability of funds. For this reason, the authorities recommend starting the process as soon as possible and confirming that the contractor or business officially participates in the program.
Until when can you request
The incentives will be in effect until June 30, 2027, but may end earlier if the allocated resources are exhausted. They may also be modified or discontinued without prior notice.
