FIPRESCI: Satyajit Ray's 'Pather Panchali' declared best Indian film, Pyaasa and Sholay also in the list

Legendary filmmaker Satyajit Ray's feature film 'Pather Panchali' has been declared the best Indian film of all time by the International Federation of Film Critics (FIPRESSI). The 1955 film secured the first position in the top 10 films in the history of Indian cinema, which was announced after a poll conducted by FIPRESCI.
'Pather Panchali' is based on the Bengali novel
According to the press release issued by FIPRESCI-India, the voting was conducted in secret, in which 30 members were involved. The film is based on a 1929 Bengali novel by Bibhutibhushan Bandopadhyay with the same name as Pather Panchali. This was the first film directed by Ray. It starred Subir Banerjee, Kanu Banerjee, Karuna Banerjee, Uma Dasgupta, Pinaki Sengupta and Chunibala Devi.

Significantly, FIPRESCI was established in 1930. It presents awards at film festivals such as Vienna International Film Festival, Toronto International Film Festival, Cannes Film Festival, Venice Film Festival, Warsaw Film Festival and International Film Festival. No Tamil language film found a place in the top 10, which included five Hindi films, three Bengali films and one Malayalam and Kannada language films each.
