More than two years have passed since the death of Julian Figueroa, the only son of actress and singer Maribel Guardia. This period has been marked by profound public grief, which the artist has shared through moving messages on social media, and by a complex legal process centered on the custody of her grandson. In one of her most recent posts, Guardia expressed her enduring pain: “Julian, today is the 9th and I miss you with all my soul… never, not even in my worst nightmares, did I imagine that heaven would call you first.” Julian Figueroa died on April 9, 2023, at the age of 27, from an acute myocardial infarction and ventricular fibrillation, according to the medical report confirmed by his mother in Mexico City. Regarding the custody of her grandson, however, amidst this grief, Guardia faced a major scandal and legal controversy with her grandson's mother, Imelda Tunon, over the child's custody. Maribel Guardia explained, through a video on her social media, that she initiated the process driven by a “moral obligation.” “I felt a moral obligation to file a complaint against my grandson’s mother, with the sole aim of defending his well-being,” she stated. Authorities temporarily granted Guardia custody after receiving complaints that included allegations of neglect and substance abuse. The actress emphasized that her priority is “to guarantee her grandson’s safety.” She insisted that her action is not intended to damage Tunon’s image or make private matters public, but only to protect the child and allow the institutions to make the most appropriate decision for his well-being. In recent statements, Imelda Tunon has claimed that young Jose Julian wants nothing to do with his grandmother, and an audio recording was even leaked in which she said that he was “bad and cruel.” Tunon stated that he will take legal action against those who leaked the audio.
