Sydney Sweeney distances herself from political labels: 'I'm not a political person'
After being linked to the Republican Party, Sydney Sweeney addressed the issue in an interview for Cosmopolitan magazine
Actress Sydney Sweeney publicly addressed the controversy that has surrounded her in recent months, specifically rejecting the nickname "Barbie MAGA" that some internet users have given her. In an exclusive interview with Cosmopolitan, the 'Euphoria' star clarified her stance on speculation about her political affiliation. The comments came after it was revealed that Sweeney has been registered as a Republican since June 2024, although she has never spoken openly about her political positions. This followed the backlash to her "Great Jeans" campaign for American Eagle Outfitters last July, which some labeled "Nazi propaganda" for highlighting her blonde hair and blue eyes. "I've never come here to talk about politics," Sweeney told the magazine. “I've always come here to make art, so this isn't a conversation I want to be at the forefront of.”
Her Position
The 28-year-old actress was emphatic in distancing herself from any political narrative: “I'm an artist. I'm not here to talk about politics. I never imagined entering that arena. It's not why I became who I am.”
Sweeney expressed frustration at being used as a “pawn” in other people's arguments: “And I think that's why people want to take it even further and use me as their pawn. But it's someone else assigning me something, and I can't control that.”
The actress acknowledged the difficulty of responding to such accusations: “There's no way to win. If I say, 'That's not true,' they'll say, 'You're just saying that to make yourself look better.'”
However, she remained firm in her principles: “I just have to continue being who I am, because I know who I am. I can't force "I want everyone to love me. I know what I stand for."
Sweeney added: "I don't believe in hate in any of its forms. I believe we should all love, respect, and understand each other."
About the American Eagle commercial
Reflecting on his initial handling of the American Eagle controversy,Sweeney admitted to People last month that her silence was a mistake: “Before, my stance was to never respond to the press, but I've recently realized that my silence on this issue has only deepened the divide.” “I was surprised by the reaction,” she confessed about the ad. "I did it because I love the jeans and the brand. I don't share the opinions that some people have chosen for the campaign." The actress is now taking a more cautious approach to her online presence: "It's definitely not comfortable having people tell you what you think or believe, especially when it's not your place. It's been strange having to deal with that." Sweeney concluded on a personal note: “It's not me who's to blame.”
