The official cause of death of 'Grey's Anatomy' actor Eric Dane has been confirmed
The actor's family shared the medical details a week after the announcement of his passing
More than a week after Eric Dane's family announced his passing, the medical details of the actor's death have been confirmed. He was known for his role as Dr. Mark Sloan "McSteamy" on 'Grey's Anatomy' and for his role in 'Euphoria'. According to a report by People, Dane passed away at age 53 due to respiratory failure. His death certificate states that the underlying cause was Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), also known as Lou Gehrig's disease. A diagnosis revealed in 2025. Eric Dane had publicly announced his ALS diagnosis in April 2025. This progressive and fatal neurological disease affects nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord, leading to a loss of muscle control that impairs the ability to breathe, speak, and move. Although there is no cure, the actor chose not to hide his diagnosis. After revealing his condition, Dane became the face of the organization 'I AM ALS,' leading a campaign to secure federal funding for research. In September 2025, he actively participated in conversations with Congressman Eric Swalwell to advocate for investments in innovative treatments and ensure access to quality care for patients and their families. Aware of the seriousness of his illness, Dane announced in December 2025 that he was writing his autobiography, titled "Book of Days: A Memoir in Moments." The actor explained that the need to write arose from "waking up every morning and immediately being reminded that this is real." His goal was to capture the beautiful and difficult days so that readers would remember "what it means to live with your heart." However, his most poignant message came via the screen. In November 2025, Dane recorded an interview for the Netflix series 'Famous Last Words,' on the condition that it would be released only after his death. The episode premiered the day after his death. In the video, Dane spoke directly to his two daughters,Billie Beatrice (15 years old) and Georgia Geraldine (13 years old), with whom he shares his life along with his wife, actress Rebecca Gayheart. Reminiscing about family moments at the beach and trips to Hawaii and Mexico, the actor shared four key lessons he learned from the disease: Live in the present, fall in love, choose friends wisely, and fight with every fiber of your being and with dignity. Dane highlighted resilience as a “superpower” that his daughters have inherited. “You knock me down, I bounce back, and I keep on recovering,” he joked, comparing himself to a cat with 15 lives. His final piece of advice was a call to face life with honesty, integrity, and grace, even in the face of the insurmountable.
