Tom Cruise shares details about his physical transformation for Digger
The actor detailed the meticulous characterization process with director Alejandro González Iñárritu to give life to the magnate Digger Rockwell
Tom Cruise decided to completely break with his Hollywood action hero image. The 64-year-old actor, recognized worldwide for performing his own parachute jumps and aerial stunts, left his followers stunned with an unrecognizable physical appearance for his most recent film project, “Digger”, a satirical black comedy directed by Mexican filmmaker Alejandro González Iñárritu.
To play Digger Rockwell—an eccentric and powerful oil tycoon whose decisions trigger a global ecological catastrophe—Cruise broke away from his usual athletic silhouette. Instead, the audience will see an elderly character on screen, with thinning gray hair, deep wrinkles, a noticeable beer belly, and dentures. It is his most extreme physical change since his legendary and fun participation as Les Grossman in “Tropic Thunder” (2008).
In recent statements to reconstruct this creative process, Cruise explained that Rockwell's aesthetic construction was a painstaking work of joint exploration.
"It's not like we already know exactly what it's going to be from the beginning. It's about exploring and discovering the visual tone, adapting to the good taste of Alejandro's eye," the star explained.
The actor delved into the small details that defined the character, from the choice of color of his iconic cowboy boots and the type of shorts, to the facial prosthetics that modified his physiognomy.
"The behavior of a character and its movement are elements that develop along with the makeup. One must constantly ask oneself during the process: is this our tone? Is it drama? Is it comedy? Is it too much? You calibrate it little by little," said Cruise, who also confessed that playing Rockwell represents the culmination of an old professional desire: "These types of films are the reason why I wanted to make movies. It took me 40 years of career to be able to put on Digger Rockwell's boots."
The film, co-produced between the United States, the United Kingdom and Mexico with a budget of $125 million, features a stellar cast that includes Sandra Hüller, Jesse Plemons, Riz Ahmed and John Goodman. The film is scheduled to premiere in theaters on October 2, 2026.
