Max fell into a 500 meter deep gorge near Palla village on Friday on the under-construction Urgam-Palla Jakhola motorway in Urgam Valley. Of the 21 people on board, 12 died while four were injured. One person had alighted just before the accident while two laborers and two locals sitting on the roof of Max jumped before falling into the ditch, saving their lives.
According to the police, on Friday afternoon a Max was going from Joshimath to Kimana village with passengers. At around 3:30 PM, Max failed to proceed on a steep climb near Palla village. Seeing it moving backwards, Jitpal Singh of Kimana village, who was riding on it, got down along with another and started pelting stones at the tyre. It is said that due to overloading the vehicle crossed the stone and started coming down fast. During this the driver lost control of the vehicle. Within seconds, Max fell 500 meters into a gorge.
The testicles of the vehicle flew away. NDRF and SDRF reached the information and started the rescue operation. By late evening the bodies of 12 people had been retrieved. Four injured were also evacuated who have been brought to Primary Health Center Urgam for treatment. Teams of NDRF, SDRF as well as the local people were engaged in the rescue operation till late night. DM Himanshu Khurana and SP Pramendra Dobal also reached on information.
CM orders magisterial inquiry, instructions to give relief amount of 2-2 lakh to the relatives of the deceased
Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami has ordered a magisterial inquiry into the vehicle accident. He also directed to give Rs 2 lakh each to the families of those killed in the accident. He inquired about the accident over phone from Chamoli District Magistrate Himanshu Khurana. The Chief Minister instructed the DMs to carry out relief and rescue work at a rapid pace. The CM was told that the SDRF, NDRF, police and administration teams including Superintendent of Police Pramendra Dobal are engaged in rescue at the spot.
