Assam on Sunday lifted the travel ban imposed on Meghalaya after six days following violence in a disputed area along the interstate border.

A senior police officer told that vehicles from Assam will now be allowed to enter Meghalaya. Cachar Superintendent of Police Nomal Mehta said, wherever necessary, vehicles are being taken under security cordon. Police patrolling has been arranged in other sensitive areas.

A police official said that the movement of vehicles has been allowed since Sunday as the tense situation along the border has improved. A few days ago, the Assam Police issued an advisory asking people to avoid traveling to the neighboring state.

Officials said barricades were put up at Jorbat near Guwahati and Cachar district, which have now been removed after the restrictions were lifted. However, no restrictions were imposed earlier on trucks, commercial vehicles carrying goods and other goods.

The family of forest guard Bidyasing Lekhte, who lost his life in violence on the Assam-Meghalaya border, will get a compensation of Rs 14 lakh and a salary till his retirement age, along with a government job for his wife. Immediately after the violence on the border, the Assam government had announced a compensation of five lakh rupees each to the families of those who lost their lives.

Significantly, violence broke out in West Karbi Anglong district after the police stopped a truck carrying illegal timber on the Assam-Meghalaya border in the early hours of last Tuesday, in which six people were killed.
