Senior Congress leader Mallikarjun Kharge was on Wednesday elected the new president of the party. He defeated his rival Shashi Tharoor by a margin of 6,825 votes. Congress's Central Election Authority chief Madhusudan Mistry declared Mallikarjun Kharge elected. He told that Kharge got 7,897 votes and Tharoor got 1,072 votes.

Shashi Tharoor, who was a candidate for the post of Congress President, congratulated Mallikarjun Kharge for his victory. He said, the process of strengthening of Congress has started.
