The flood situation in Assam remained very serious on Sunday as well and some more areas came under its influence in many districts of the state. At the same time, many areas of Guwahati were submerged in water due to torrential rains overnight. According to the latest update by the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA), floods and landslides are taking place in the state for the last six days, causing widespread destruction.

According to the ASDMA, floods have been reported in 118 revenue areas and 4,291 villages in 32 districts in the last 24 hours. Around 31 lakh people have been affected and 1.56 lakh of them have taken shelter in 514 different relief camps across the state. ASDMA said that relief material has also been distributed to the people affected by the floods and those who have not taken shelter in the relief camps. At least 302 relief distribution centers have been opened temporarily. The National Disaster Response Force is helping the district administration in evacuating people from the flood-affected areas. State Disaster Response Force, fire and emergency service personnel as well as policemen and volunteers of ASDMA have also been deployed for the rescue work.

According to the daily flood report of ASDMA, eight people lost their lives at different places due to the inundation. It has been told in the report that this year the number of people who lost their lives in floods and landslides across the state has increased to 62. Meanwhile, more landslides have been reported in Cachar, Dima Hasao, Gowalpara, Hailakandi, Kamrup Metropolitan, Karimganj and South Salmara districts.

The state recorded an average of 37.2 mm of rain during the last 24 hours. According to the bulletin of the Central Water Commission, the Brahmaputra river is flowing above the danger mark in the towns of Nimtighat in Jorhat, Tezpur, Gowalpara and Dhubri in Sonitpur. Its tributaries are also flowing above the danger mark at many places.
