The Central Government has given an important statement regarding the death penalty in the Supreme Court on Tuesday. The government has said it is considering commuting the death penalty to death by hanging. The Center said that it is considering the formation of an expert committee for this, which will examine the existing methods of giving death penalty.
A bench of Chief Justice DY Chandrachud and Justice JB Pardiwala took note of this representation by Attorney General R Venkataramani. The Attorney General told the court that the process of finalizing the names for the proposed panel was in its final stages and he would give more details on the issue after some time.
To this, the bench said, "The Attorney General has said to consider the appointments in the committee. In view of this, we will give a fixed date for hearing it after the summer vacations."
Significantly, the Supreme Court had said on March 21 that it may consider giving death sentence through hanging. On this, the court had demanded the Center to give better data on different methods of death penalty. In this case, advocate Rishi Malhotra had filed a public interest litigation in 2017 and said that instead of the death sentence, it is necessary to consider some less painful way of death.
