With overwhelming participation at the polls and by mail, Proposition 50, which authorizes the use of new maps for congressional districts in California for the 2026, 2028, and 2030 elections, was overwhelmingly approved by voters. The most recent figures from the Secretary of State gave him a 63.8% approval rating against 36.2%, mainly against voters in the conservative areas of the state. We're talking about 4.4 million votes in favor.

According to the Los Angeles County Office of Elections, both in-person and early mail-in voting showed an upward trend compared to similar off-cycle elections, but authorities have not yet released an official turnout percentage, nor have they yet disclosed how many Latino voters went to the polls.

Dean C. Logan, Los Angeles County Registrar/Clerk, announced that 91,286 ballots have been processed since election night, including ballots returned to the United States Postal Service (USPS) and those deposited in ballot drop boxes on Election Day.

The total vote count as of Wednesday, November 5, is 2,064,857, representing 35.33% of registered voters.

“Here in California, we passed Proposition 50 by an overwhelming margin with historic turnout. “Provoke the bear, and it roared,” said Governor Gavin Newsom, the driving force behind Proposition 50, shortly after the polls closed. As expected, California Republicans filed a federal lawsuit arguing that the electoral maps approved by voters are unconstitutional because they favor one race—Latinos—over others. The lawsuit targets 16 congressional districts across California, from the Central Valley to Los Angeles and San Diego counties. “The California Legislature violated the Fourteenth and Fifteenth Amendments to the Constitution by drawing new congressional district lines based on race, specifically to favor Hispanic voters,”“without cause or evidence to justify it,” they claim in the complaint.

But Izzy Gardon, a spokeswoman for Newsom, predicted the lawsuit would not succeed.

“We haven’t reviewed the lawsuit, but if it’s coming from the California Republican Party and the law firm of Harmeet Dhillon, it will fail,” she said.

Democratic leaders said in a statement that the new maps empower Latino voters and create districts designed to help Latino voters “elect their preferred candidates.”

The lawsuit, funded by the Congressional Republican National Committee, seeks an injunction to stop the Proposition 50 maps from taking effect.

Republicans are asking to be heard by a three-judge panel, but the case is expected to go to the Supreme Court and be resolved by December.

Following the passage of Proposition 50, five Republican congressmen are highly likely to lose their seats due to that their districts have become more liberal, in next year's midterm elections. On the chopping block are Kevin Kiley of Rocklin, representative for upstate California; Doug LaMalfa of Chico; Ken Calvert of Riverside; David Valadao of the southern Central Valley; and Darrell Issa of Escondido in eastern San Diego County. Nurses and other volunteers who knocked on more than 17,000 doors and made more than 394,500 calls, urging people to vote Yes on Proposition 50, thanked California voters for passing the measure to stand up to Texas and other states that they said steal voting power from African Americans, Latinos, and working-class people to maintain control of Congress. “Proposition 50 combats the racist redistricting of electoral districts in Texas and other states,” said Sandy Reding, a registered nurse and president of the California Nurses Association (CNA).

“Elections matter. We saw what happened in July when Republicans voted for HR 1, dismantling Medicaid and leaving millions without health insurance to fund tax cuts for billionaires and corporations.”
