Three years after LA 28, the Play LA program has already exceeded one million registrations

He also highlighted that the preliminary competition schedule was released this Monday.
“There is much to celebrate today: the one million registrations for the LA28 pre-Games program through the Play LA program, in addition to the first look at the Olympic competition schedule, meticulously developed to ensure that the best athletes in the world can compete in Los Angeles. We are energized by today’s milestones and remain focused on the work ahead as the Road to 2028 continues,” he added.
The Play LA program is a product of a collaboration between the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and the Los Angeles Department of Recreation and Parks (LA28), in which a $160 million investment has been invested, offering quality, affordable, and inclusive sports programming for children of all abilities.
This program offers children ages 3 to 17 the opportunity to participate in more than 40 Olympic and adaptive sports, including aquatics, track and field, boxing, flag football, judo, adaptive swimming, adaptive track and field, Paralympic surfing, sitting volleyball, and more.
For her part, Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass also shared her joy at the proximity of the moment when the first medal will be awarded in Venice Beach.
“We are three years away from the LA Memorial Coliseum hosting the opening ceremony of the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games and I am proud that the first medal will be awarded on the iconic Venice Beach. When the world comes here for these Games, We will highlight each neighborhood by hosting a Games for everyone and will work to ensure they leave a monumental legacy. We are already fulfilling that legacy by announcing that we have surpassed one million registrations for Play LA. Regarding the schedule, it was confirmed that the Opening Ceremony will be on Friday, July 14 at 8 pm ET / 5 pm PT at the LA Memorial Coliseum, while the Closing Ceremony will be at the same venue on July 30 at 9 pm ET / 6 pm PT.
The track and field and swimming competitions will get off to a strong start, as they will take place in the first and second weeks, respectively, something that has not happened before. This is with the exception of the marathon events, which will be held the last weekend, as is tradition.
The first medal will be awarded in the triathlon on the first day and will take place on the vibrant Venice Beach coast.
On the other hand, the last medal to be awarded will be in swimming on day 16 of the competition. at 2028 Stadium prior to the closing ceremony.
That closing weekend is expected to be the most exciting of the tournament, with 15 gold medals being awarded in a single day, while 16 medals in various team sports and 19 in individual sports will be up for grabs over the course of the weekend.
For the first time in nearly 30 years, the Games will return to the United States with a schedule designed to accommodate the domestic and international audiences for the 844 ticketed events.
