Sergio “Chiquito” Romero ended his time at Boca Juniors after terminating his contract with the club and will be a new player for Argentinos Juniors. The 38-year-old goalkeeper, who arrived in 2022 after his stint with Venezia in Italy, explained that his fight with a fan at La Bombonera was the breaking point in his relationship with the club.

Romero signed his release at Boca Juniors' offices and spoke to the press before saying goodbye. “The fight with the fan was the breaking point. I think we are all human beings, and often times we have situations that we know how to handle and others that we don't. Unfortunately, that day I didn't know how to handle that situation,” the goalkeeper acknowledged.

The incident occurred during the 1-0 defeat to River Plate in the Liga Profesional. As he was leaving the locker room, a fan insulted him, and Romero reacted by confronting him face to face and even hitting him. “He insulted me so much that he found me,” he later admitted. That reaction had internal consequences: he was suspended for two games and the club decided to look for a new goalkeeper in the next transfer market.

A cycle with ups and downs and a close without resentment

Despite that bitter end, Romero was grateful to the management and the fans. "Due to the misfortune of one day losing my temper with a spectator, it was like my end at this club. I am grateful to the fans, the president, and the board," he stated.

The goalkeeper also had special words for Juan Roman Riquelme: "Beyond the fact that he is the club's president, he is a friend to me. We fixed everything in three minutes when I arrived, and now he hasn't put up any obstacles. He wished me the best, as he has done all his life."

Romero leaves Boca having played 88 matches, having been a key player in the campaign that led the team to the runner-up spot in the 2023 Copa Libertadores. "At first, things went quite well for me, and in the last year, I haven't been able to perform as this goal deserves. But I'm leaving happy. I've shown many that I wasn't finished," he stated.

The goalkeeper with the most appearances in the history of the Argentine National Team reflected on his experiences: “A beautiful era is coming to an end. I thoroughly enjoyed this club. I am leaving with the best memories because they made me feel at home.”

For its part, Boca Juniors issued an official statement confirming the departure: “Club Atletico Boca Juniors announces that player Sergio Romero has signed a contract termination agreement with the club. We thank him for his time at the club and wish him much success in his future endeavors.”
