Dmitry Bivol returns to the ring defending one of his titles
Russian Dmitry Bivol has been out of action for almost a year, following a back injury
The International Boxing Federation (IBF) confirmed that the defense of the 175-pound title will go to auction on February 3. Dmitry Bivol returns to the ring for a mandatory title fight after the deadline for negotiations with German Michael Eifert passed. The unified champion hasn't stepped into the ring since February 2015, when he defeated Artur Beterbiev by points. In this context, Bivol will try to avoid being stripped of his belt. Current situation of the light heavyweight championship: Bivol currently holds the WBA, IBF, and WBO titles in the light heavyweight division. The fight against Eifert is a mandatory requirement that the Russian's team must fulfill during the spring. Negotiations between Matchroom Boxing and the promoter SES did not reach a satisfactory financial agreement. Therefore, Bivol will put his belt on the line through the open bidding process.
The IBF previously granted a medical exemption to the Russian champion due to a herniated disc surgery.
Michael Eifert earned his challenger position after defeating Jean Pascal in March 2023.
Consequences of not complying with the mandate
If the champion decides not to face Eifert, he will automatically lose his IBF recognition.
Because of this, Bivol will have to fight as the only way to maintain his unified status.
The sanctioning body does not allow any more exceptions, especially after David Benavidez's departure from the division.
While Bivol is coming off avenging his only loss against Beterbiev, Eifert has had little official activity.
David Benavidez, the WBC champion, will move up to cruiserweight to face Gilberto “Zurdo” Ramirez in May.
The winner of the February 3rd auction will have the right to organize the fight at the venue of their choice.
